The Russian Science Foundation has supported scientific project of scholars of the Institite of Economics of the Karelian Research centre RAS titled "Development of domestic and inbound tourism in the Arctic regions of the Russian Federation considering local interests and sustainable nature management” (Head of project - Svetlana Kondrateva). The Project in the travel and tourism field at the Institute of Economics KarRC RAS was supported by the Russian Science Foundation for the first time.
The Arctic regions are a significant resource for the socio-economic development of the Russian Federation, where the severity of the natural and climatic conditions for human life and activity requires special attention to achieving a high quality of life for the local population. One of the tools for maintaining and restoring the physical and emotional strength of a person is tourism, the possibility of a good leisure and recreation in the place of residence. Despite the growing interest in the Arctic, the use of its unique tourist and recreational potential of both natural and anthropogenic genesis, including the cultural traditions of the local population, is limited by a number of endogenous and exogenous factors. There is the lack of scientific theoretical and practical-oriented developments on integrated assessment of the tourist systems of the Arctic regions devoted to the opportunities for recreation and recreation of the local population, the functioning of domestic and international inbound tourism, sustainable environmental management approaches as well as the interests of the local community.

The focus of the project is the assessment, identification of specific and general trends in the development of tourism systems of the Russian Arctic regions as well as the development of measures to improve their functioning. This challenge is aimed at strengthening the competitiveness of tourist destinations on the International and Russian tourist markets and improving the services and quality of life of the local population through better opportunities for tourism and recreation in their places of residence.
