May 22, 2015 The Karelian Research Centre of RAS hosted an international seminar on "Human security and socio-economic development of the northern peripheral areas". Seminar was organized by "Centre for the North, the Arctic and the cross-border cooperation", Karelian Research Centre of Russian Academy of Sciences, Institute of Economics of Karelian Research Centre of RAS and Petrozavodsk State University. The event was held as part of the international summer school "Safety and resources in the Barents Sea" as part of the International Symposium "Calotte Academy."

The speakers at the seminar were members of the Institute: Yuri Saveliev, "The problems of economic security of border regions and their solutions", Evgeny Zhirnel "New institutions to resolve conflicts of business and government," Mikhail Sukharev "Russian Arctic frontier and challenges of the XXI century", Pavel Druzhinin and Galina Shkiperova "The economic development of the northern region of the peripheral and environmental safety."

Seminar as part of the Summer School has been held for the third time and has become a regular international event to discuss the issues of sustainable development of the Arctic countries and regions and international security issues.
